MOnaco
Rental Car Monaco Nice

No matter where you're coming from your likely to land at the Nice - Cote d' Azure airport. To really experience this part of the world you are going to need a car. Think small and fast. If you are up for a convertible, Europcar will rent you an Alfa Romeo Spider for 290 Euros a day or a Mini Cooper convertible for around 195.

If you have a reservation, ignore the rental car booths, head to terminal 2, go out the front door and across the parking lot. There you'll find all the rental car agencies. For the Alfa they asked for two credit cards and took a 2,000 Euro deposit on each. Plan on 45 minutes or so to complete the process.

We had no troubles with this rental agency and would recommend them.

The Metropole is the most modern of the major hotels in Monte Carlo. At the time of our visit, in September 2007, only the top floors had been remodeled. This property is in a very good location. It is a very short walk to the main casino. The only hotel in the square with the casino is Hotel de Paris.

Metropole Monaco
Deluxe Junior Suite Metropole We rented a Deluxe Junior Suite in a spa package that included a total of four hours of treatments. The room was 800 Euros per night. A junior suite in Europe is usually about the size of a deluxe room in the states. The bed was very comfortable. There is a couch and chairs to the right (out of the photo). The bathroom was large by European standards and very nice.

The photo to the right is of the sitting area in the hallway just outside our room, #702. There are hairdryers in the rooms. There is a 110v outlet in the bathroom that worked to charge camera batteries and cellphones. There was also one 220v to 110v adapter we moved around as needed.

There is no iron in the room and we were told, none in the hotel. We spent 90 Euros (9 Euros each for most items) to have the hotel press them for us. Laundry service is same day if you send it early enough.

Internet access is 20 Euros per day. The connection is dependable and fast.

Metropole Hotel Monte Carlo Monaco
Lobby Bar Metropole

There are two sections to the lobby bar. You may not enter the part closest to the restaurant after 7pm with shorts on. Although, it seemed dogs were allowed at any time.

T-shirts are ok but most men are wearing long sleeved shirts. Drinks here are around 8 Euros, about the same price as everywhere. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant as it appeared a jacket was required.

We enjoyed this hotel and would return.

THE CASINO - The Real Deal

I do not know why there is so much misinformation about the casino. Let's see if I can clear it up.

1) There are many casinos in Monte Carlo. The Casino, that is the main tourist attraction, is in the main square. There is another one there as well.

2) Jackets are NOT required in the casino. As a matter of fact, they are rare. No shorts for guys is all there is to the dress code. I went in wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

3) Passports are NOT required in the casino. You do need a picture ID. We showed our Texas drivers license.

4) Admission is 10 Euros. The Metropole gave us a card that let us in without paying.

WHERE TO PARTY
Clubs come and go but here is what is hot in the fall of 2007.
Sass was enough fun that we returned every night but one. The lounge act is great. The place gets very crowded from midnight to 2:30am. Thursday through Sunday you need to be there by 11pm if you want a place to sit. It is a tiny club that packs them in. There was even a fair crowd on Sunday. Drinks are the usual 7-12 Euros.
Karament Night Club is across the street from Sass. It is a large modern dance club. This bar attracts the a group. The music is loud and good. The dance floor is big and the crowd is mixed. Bring your energy and your dancing shoes. There is an outdoor deck that is a little quieter.
Cafe de Paris has a mellow outdoor cafe bar that has a view of the casino. It's a great place to people watch and car watch. In the first 15 minutes we saw 3 Lamborghini Gallardos pass by, all in different colors. If it's exotic and has wheels you'll see it in Monte Carlo.
Jimmy'z - This place is over the top. We went at half past midnight on a Saturday. The place was packed with good looking and apparently wealthy people. A mixed drink and a beer were 61 Euros. The dance floor was packed and the booths around the dance floor (I can only imagine what they cost) were full. The DJ kept the club rockin. Getting a cab out of there was difficult. We left at 2:30 and the club hadn't begun to slow down. You have to go to this club.
Food

There is no shortage of restaurants in Monte carlo and I can't say we had a bad meal. Here are a couple within walking distance of the main square that we liked.

Pacific Restaurant
is Asian Fusion. The service here was better than average and the food was good. Dinner for two with drinks will usually run about 120 euros. Tips are not included and are usually paid in cash. There is no tip line on the credit card vouchers.

Rompaldi
(not sure I spelled that right) was a great splurge. Lobster, steak and a botlle of wine was 230 Euros. A good way to signal the waiter you are ready for the check is lay your credit card on the table.

Le Bistroquet is good and a bargain. We had dinner for two and wine for less than 100 Euros. There is a mall nexto to the Metropole. There are a few places to grab something inexpensive and quick for lunch or breakfast in there. Take the escalator, to the left of the Metroplole, down.
